Death rates forcancer are falling for all Americans, but black Americans are still more likelyto die of
cancer thanwhites, the American Cancer Society said Monday.
In a special reporton cancer and blacks, the organization said blacks are usually diagnosed withcancer
later thanwhites, and they are more likely to die of the disease.
This could bebecause of unequal access to medical care, because blacks are more likely tohave other
diseases likediabetes as well, and perhaps because of differences in the biology of thecancer itself, the report added.
"Ingeneral,African Americans have]ess likelihood of surviving five years after diagnosis than whitesfor
all cancer sites andall stages of diagnosis,"the report said.
"In describingcancer statistics for African Americans, this report recognizes thatsocioeconomic dispari-
ties and unequalaccess to medical care may underlie many of the differences associated withrace."
The Cancer Societysaid blacks should be encouraged to get check-ups earlier, when cancer is more
treatable, and itsaid more research was needed to see if biological differences play a role.
